Heart Disease is a general term for a wide variety of
diseases & conditions that affects the functions of the
heart.
The main job of the heart is to pump the blood to the rest of
the body. The primary concern with the heart disease is mostly
how much they affect the heart’s ability to pump the blood.
When we use the term heart disease, we are often referring to ATHEROSCLEROSIS or BLOCKED ARTERIES. Blocked
heart arteries cause coronary artery disease or CAD. In turn,
coronary artery disease can lead to :
1. Chest pain in the form of stable angina
or unstable angina.
2. Congestive heart failure, in which the heart
fails to pump enough blood to supply body tissues.
3. Heart attacks.
4. Irregular heart beats, or arrhythmias.
But Heart disease can also refer many other conditions.
Heart disease is the world wide leading cause of death as shown
in the graph below.

2. Referred pain : jaw, left arm, right arm,
back.
3. Breathlessness on exertion.

5. Cyanosis or a bluish discoloration of the
skin.

8. Enlarged veins in the neck.
9. Fainting or passing out.
10. Loss of appetite & wt. loss.
